Grandma’s Greek Meatballs (Keftedes) – The Perfect Meze

Some of my fondest childhood memories are in my grandmother’s kitchen, where the scent of oregano and sizzling olive oil filled the air. Whenever guests came over, she would always whip up a plate of her famous small, round keftedes—crispy on the outside, juicy and fragrant on the inside, with just a hint of ouzo to remind you that you’re in Greece.

These little meatballs were not just food; they were a sign of hospitality, laughter, and shared moments around the table. So here’s her special recipe, exactly the way she made it.

Servings: About 4 small meatballs per portion

Cooking Time: 10-15 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 kg (2.2 lbs) ground beef
  • 250 g (9 oz) bread crumbs or soaked bread (well-squeezed)
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 onions, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3-4 tbsp ouzo
  • Oregano, salt, and black pepper to taste
  • A little flour for dredging
  • Olive oil for frying

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix all the ingredients together as you would for traditional meatballs. Add the ouzo gradually, kneading the mixture well until everything is combined. The ouzo not only adds a light aroma but also helps tenderize the meat.
  2. Cover the bowl and let the mixture rest in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes—just as my grandmother used to say, "Good things take their time."
  3. When ready, shape the mixture into small, round meatballs—these should be bite-sized, perfect for sharing over good conversation.
  4. Lightly coat them with flour and fry them in hot olive oil until golden brown and crispy on the outside.
  5. Place them on a plate lined with paper towels to absorb excess oil.

💡 Serving Tip: Enjoy them warm with a squeeze of lemon, a side of tzatziki, and, of course, a glass of ouzo—just like my grandmother would have wanted.

These Greek-style keftedes are not just a dish, but a little taste of home, tradition, and love. Gather your friends, pour some ouzo, and let the stories begin!
